Don’t promote yourself. Self-promotion will not help your therapy practice succeed. “Promoting my practice” sounds less self-aggrandising than “shameless self promotion” but it is unlikely to have better results. Instead, focus on promoting solutions for your clients.
The big reason that shameless self promotion doesn’t work
Self-adulation doesn’t work because people are self-interested.
A potential client is going to reach out to you if they get a vibe that you can help solve their problems, alleviate their pain, or even just listen attentively. Help your potential client connect with you by demonstrating empathy and describing how you can improve their life. Your potential clients are selfish. A long list of your degrees, accomplishments, and awards won’t make them feel good about themselves. However, describing a path to healing and recovery is more likely to make potential clients reach out to and set up an initial consultation.
The difference between self-adulation and promoting your ideas
Self-adulation refers to how great and impressive you are. Of course, there is a place on your website and professional profiles (such as your Psychology Today profile) to describe your very impressive qualifications. Your qualifications should take second place to your ideas, your solutions, and your client stories.
When you promote your solutions and your ideas, you give potential clients a vision of how their life might improve. You give potential clients a path to follow and a goal to strive more.
When you effectively promote your practice, you are helping your future client connect with you on a gut level. Many clients will then read your “About” page to confirm your credentials, but they won’t read about you unless they first start to feel that you can help. Read more about thinking like a client, not like a therapist.
Nothing comes merely by thinking about it.
