Use YouTube to Promote Your Practice

YouTube for Therapists and CounselorsHave you considered posting a video on YouTube to promote your practice? Here are a few tips to guide you through the process.

Embed the video on your site

Don’t send visitors to your site away to YouTube to view your video! If you link to YouTube, you are sending your client or potential client away to one of the greatest distractions ever known to man. You will lose your client.

Embed the video on your website so that visitors to the site can get to know you while remaining on your site, close to your telephone number and contact form. The video on this page, offering an introduction to TherapyEverywhere, is a good example of an embedded video.

You can see a good example of a therapist using embedded YouTube on the site of Margot Borden, a therapist who works with expatriates trying to manage cultural dislocation and loneliness.

Your worst enemy on YouTube may be you

Have you been hesitating to make a video about you or your practice because you don’t have the time or the resources to make a professional, slick video? If so, join the club. Most therapists that we interview who have considered a YouTube video hold back, hoping or waiting for the perfect video production.

Guess what? “The perfect is the enemy of the good” is an aphorism that holds true for therapists and coaches holding back, waiting for the ultimate video. If you have a chance to make a better video in the future, do it. In the meantime, get started with what you have.

To be imperfect is to be human (and successful) using YouTube to promote your practice

Procrastination is your enemy. If you have a message to share about your approach to healing and growth, get it out there! Watson-Watt (who developed early warning radar in Britain) would suggest that you do the best you can, and in fact propounded a cult of the imperfect. Record your video, post it, and start promoting it.

Give them the third best to go on with; the second best comes too late, the best never comes.

You can use YouTube to promote your practice even if you are totally allergic to video

If you just don’t see yourself as a video star, then consider creating an animated presentation with voice and/or music to present key selling points for your practice. What makes people become your clients? Tell your story with animation if you can’t do video. There are a fair number of animation studios that can help you use YouTube to promote your practice and the cost can be surprisingly reasonable.
